I wrote this song while sitting along a rocky coastal shoreline, looking to the earth for help and comfort-- as if it was a wise old man. I've always felt closest to God in the natural world, where I am forced to stop, slow down, and be reminded to take pleasure in existence itself. It is a pleasure... simple, ancient and so true. The world is so very often a difficult place to be. Throughout my life, I've faced many disappointments, failures, and hurts, but I've also come to more fully believe that the only way I've been able to cope with pain is to embrace the world as it is, knowing that the final satisfaction will come beyond this place here.
As I get older, I find myself more often subconsciously personifying earth... You catch the earth's beautiful face "smiling" and "laughing" through a sunset or through some autumn leaves. The sun stretches itself out across a field or rocks along the coast. You hear the laughter of the waves more loudly than that of the kids on the sand. The earth seems to delight in simply being. Calmly and with a sort of cheer, the earth embraces existence and encourages me to do the same... to accept, appreciate and enjoy the world for what it is. What this earth personified has taught me, is that life on earth means facing the trial of existence and finding beauty in its struggle. As Bootsy Collins once said, "The secret to walkin´ on water is knowing where the rocks are.”
